Wisdom, Wellness and Mind Control
The most stressful time of the year is upon us! The time to be merry and cheerful – whilst also balancing your workload, budgeting, buying gifts, looking good, exercising, eating right, taking care of your social life and love life and God knows what else! How on earth do we seem to manage every year without totally losing our minds? At MN, we reflect on the wise teachings of Marcus Aurelis (121 AD – 180AD).
Marcus was a Roman Emperor that ruled between the years of 161-180 AD. He wrote his philosophies for life, wellness and well being down, and his teachings have been passed on and looked to for generations. His teachings are full of wisdom and can still be applied today. We’ve gathered a list of his best words of advice for many issues we still face today.
- Love and Acceptance
One of his most fundamental teachings is to treat each other with care and respect. Marcus advises that we are all made from one another, and must teach or better each other in the best ways we know how as this is we can aim to progress.
- Illness
When he would fall ill, Marcus would insist on not seeing a doctor (we do not advise this – medicine has come a very long way since!), and would take his attention to calming the mind and eating well, in the way he always does. He would listen to his body and provide it with what it asks for, whether it is food, water or rest.
- Gossip
Marcus wasted very little time on gossip, as he would notice how much of leisurely time could be wasted on trivial things, when his own flaws and areas of work demanded more of his attention. Gossip, in his opinion, was a waste of time that could be better spent working on you and being a better version of yourself.
4. Happiness
The ability to calm the mind and control thoughts is a skill Marcus acquired and perfected over time, and he deemed it invulnerable. Marcus advised that if it is possible to finally achieve the ability to control your mind and the way that you think, you are deemed untouchable. Nothing can surprise you or affect you in a way that is detrimental to you as if you will be able to face and conquer anything that may come your way. Achieving this level of mental clarity is something we have yet to achieve, but my goodness, doesn’t it sound unbelievably peaceful?
- Anxiety
These days, anxiety and worry seems to be common feeling among many of us, and with all that we have to worry about, it does not seem too surprising. Even with our lists of worries and responsibilities, Marcus’ advise on the matter is very simple: why should we worry about the future, if it is yet to happen, and when most importantly, the present is what immediately calls for your attention? Very wise words, Marcus! Bob Marley seemed to hit the nail on the head when he sang the words we should all aim to live by in the stressful season:
“Don’t worry, about a thing.
‘Cause every little thing,
Is gonna be alright!” (“Don’t Worry", Marley, 1977)
Keep this in mind and all will surely be Well! Now, this week, we have an amazing new salad recipe for you to try!
